We got in yesterday and I have to confess to feeling a little like death after not getting enough sleep for the last week. We were met by our local 'Honcho' Olga. She is a very small Russian lady. We've seen a bunch of the towering high heeled monsters so I was pretty pleased with what we've got.
Last night she took us to Georgian restaurant for some authentic Russian cuisine. I went for some dumplings which we're predominantly stodge with a smattering of generic meat. Exactly what I was hoping for and pretty good when washed down with a glass of Georgian red wine (not sure how they grow grapes there...).
Today saw the obligatory visit to the Hermitage and visit to the Ballet. The Hermitage is BIG and has literally tons of stuff. 3 million pieces apparently. We were shown around by a small old lady (I think they're called Babushkas over here) who said she's been working there for 50 years and hasn't seen it all (however she might have had Alzheimer's).
I'm pretty sure going to the Ballet in St.Petersburg is like going to Les Mis in London. However, I'm not proud so enjoyed checking out Romeo and Juliet ballet style. They're very into ballet over here. There were all sorts of punters in there and lots of men with manbags, seems to be the thing here. I might get one.
I'll expunge my philosophical views on Russia when we're a few more days in.
